My goals for EasyASL.com
My goal is to make EasyASL.com a useful resource for anyone that would like to learn or extend their knowledge of ASL (American Sign Language). If you have a loved one or friend who is deaf or has decreased hearing, American Sign Language may be your only choice for communicating with him or her. American Sign Langauge, also referred to as ASL, is a language expressed by visible hand gestures. ASL contains phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax and pragmatics just like spoken languages.
ASL Fingerspelling
One aspect of ASL is fingerspelling. In ASL, fingerspelling is as it sounds, you use the fingers of one hand to form symbols and gestures that represent the letters of the alphabet. Fingerspelling is used to spell out words, such as proper nouns, or for emphasis. Sometimes it is necessary to gain clarification. For instance, if I’m evern uncertain of a sign, I may ask a deaf friend how to sign a word. By fingerspelling the word to them, they were then easily able to give me an answer. There are certainly other circumstances in which it could be useful to fingerspell, these are simply the most common usages I have for fingerspelling. You can view the ASL manual alphabet that is used for fingerspelling on wikipedia.
